Acupressure
Acupressure is a traditional massage that originated in Asia. It is based on the belief that the body's energy flow can be disrupted by trauma, injury and illness, that in turn creates isolated pockets of muscle tension, that block important nerve pathways.

By applying pressure to these points, the tension is released and the energies can flow freely and naturally. On a more scientific note, some studies have shown that the pressure releases natural endorphins into the system, promoting relaxation and healing.

Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy massage combines the traditional kneading-style massage with essential oils that have various specialized effects on the body and mind through both the skin and inhalation. The pressure tends to be lighter than with the "Swedish" massage, allowing the oils to do much of the work. See essential oils for more details about the effects of aromatherapy.

Ayurvedic Massage
Originating in India, Ayurveda, is an ancient holistic medicine promoting the unity of body, mind and spirit. Most spas that don't actually specializes in this form of medicine have adopted a few of Ayurveda's extensive range of treatments. Ayurvedic massage unblocks invisible points of energy flow, enabling the body to heal itself more effectively. These massages can include thorough scalp massage and body kneading performed by two therapists simultaneously, generally using special scented oils.

Craniosacral Massage
Craniosacral massage focuses on the head, using a light touch and acupressure therapy to release tension and restore the balance of energy by restoring blocked connections between the head, spinal cord and body. Since only the head is involved, it's an ideal starter treatment for those too shy to take their clothes off in front of a stranger.

  Deep-tissue Massage
Deep-tissue massage can be pretty intense for the newcomer - though very effective. The therapist works deep into the muscles to separate traumatized muscles that remain tight from extreme tension of injury. It can be a bit painful, since it involves manipulating the fascia, a thin tissue that connects muscle tissue.

Lymphatic Massage
Lymphatic massage employs a rhythmic touch and pressure on the lymph glands that speeds the detoxification of the body through eliminating waste through the lymphatic system. It is particularly effective against water retention.

Reflexology
Reflexology has grown very popular in recent years. Originating in Asia, it is basically a pressure-point massage focusing on specific nerve locations on the feet, hands and ears that correspond to specific organs and nerves throughout the body. It most commonly (and popularly) concentrates on the feet. When the therapist presses on the point, tension is released and energy flows, allowing healing. It is very convenient and often included with manicures and pedicures.

Shiatsu
Shiatsu originated in Japan and is based on the same principles as acupressure. Traditionally, the massage takes place on the floor while you remain fully clothed, but in modern spas is often part of a series of treatments performed on the massage table. The original method involves walking on your back with highly skilled feet (and lightweight therapists).

Sports Massage
Sports massage is favored by athletes since it tends to concentrate on muscle groups relevant to the activities that particular person performs. It is a deep massage and can be slightly painful for the uninitiated.

Stone Massage
Stone massage is a relatively recent trend in spa treatments and of the New Age variety. Various types of stone (believed to have unique effects) are laid on "Chakra", or life-force points on the body, and also used to knead the musclesLa Stone was the first trademarked stone massage system and is offered at many spas.

Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is the most common type in the west - similar to the ones people give each other at home.
It employs uses stroking, kneading, rolling and light "karate chopping" movements to loosen up the muscles. Aside from its therapeutic benefits, it is immediately pleasant and relaxing.
