Rock Climbing Around Thailand
The area which interests most interests visitors is in Southern Thailand near Krabi and Koh Phi Phi. However, although without the magic of belaying on the beach, the rest of Thailand has much to over the visitor with a number of other areas and some quality blundering.
Climbing in Chiang Mai Thailand's northern most city is a great place to hang out anyway but with the addition of Thailand's best artificial wall in the Night Bazaar (The Peak) in the last couple of years and continued expansion at Crazy Horse Buttress, the scene seems to have improved immeasurably. The Peak were originally involved in the development of Crazy Horse after its original discovery by a Thai climber in the mid nineties. All credit to them for that.
This seems to have changed somewhat as Josh Morris resigned as manager of the Peak (and is no longer connected to them in any way) and started his own company - Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventures.
Langsak in Uthai Thani Province This is a great crag but sadly 3 1/2 hours away from Bangkok 60 metres of spotless limestone and some great routes. It does not get enough traffic to merit a complete write up but there are some photos here and a couple of *** routes there.
Lopburi - Khao Cheen Lair The development at Khao Cheen Lair continue. Just two hours way from Bangkok and with some great limestone this continues to be the focus of routing activities for Bangkokians. There has been 14 new routes added (5 - 6c+) over the last couple of years. David Estey has led the charge on this after his initial discovery of the crag and Jack is keeping it going. More to follow.
Khao Yoi Located just 90 mins south of Bangkok and the first place to open up outside of Krabi, this is a Bangkok climbers favourite. With most climbs in the 6a - 6c range, this is a popular crag with about high quality climbs.
Bouldering in Thailand The question of bouldering in Thailand is one asked of this webmaster more than any other. There are a number of options for those with an aversion to ropes and although this isn't Fontainebleau or Joshua Tree there is some of the short gnarly stuff to be had.
Krabi - Railay Beach and Ton Sai Without doubt Thailand's most developed and extensive climbing area. With over 500 bolted routes in walking distance, the ability to belay off the beach in many areas and all year round sunshine, this has deservedly become one of the world's top climbing holiday destinations. Many choose to spend their entire winters here on the famously steep rock. Prices are cheap by western standards with most bungalows charging nothing more than it would cost to pitch a tent at home.
Phra Nang and Railay Beach are located on a peninsular which juts out from the main land. They are only accessible by boat from the Provincial Town of Krabi in the South of Thailand.
The entire area is covered with fabulous towering cliffs of limestone and dense unspoiled jungle, which conceals fantastic caves full of stalactites and stalagmites.
The white beaches melt into an aquamarine sea as the sun beats down. Palm fronds and billowing foliage provide shade as you gaze out over the azure blue.
This makes Railay a great climbing playground for the beginner right up to the famous like Todd Skinner, Lyn Hill, Francois Legrand and Ben Moon.
