Samui Island Hopping
ANG THONG
MARINE NATIONAL PARK
AnG Thong Marine National Park This national park comprises
around 40 islands covering 250 square kilometres. The
islands rise from the sea in limestone cliffs. A number of
small peaceful bays and tiny coves. Also numerous small
beaches. The biggest attraction here is the emerald
saltwater lake called Talay Noi (Small ocean) on Koh Mae Ko.
The lake is in the middle of the island and requires a
strenuous climb. The park is perfect for snorkelling. Lots
of day and half-day excursions to choose from.
KOH TAO
OR TURTLE ISLAND
Koh Tao or Turtle Island 45kms north of Koh Samui, very
popular with tourists and is also the largest dive training
centre in Southeast Asia.
Around three hours by boat from
Samui - from the Bophut, Na Thon or Chumpon piers. Only
basic bungalow-type accommodation. However, it is the
underwater world around it which attracts tourists and
divers. Perfect conditions for experts and novices. Many
qualified international dive operators organise dives.
KOH NANGYUAN
Kho Nangyuan is about four hours by ferry. Perfect Robinson
Crusoe type of getaway. Comfortable bungalows and no
distractions except for excellent coral reefs for
snorkelling.
KOH PHANGAN
Koh Phangan is a backpacker haven and cheaper alternative to
Koh Samui. Almost as big as Samui and just a half-hour boat
ride away. Far less developed with tracks criss-crossing the
island and linking a few beaches. Basic budget and
moderately priced accommodation. Electricity from generators
or oil lamps. Easy access from Maenam and Bophut piers in
Samui. The boats call at Thong Sala and Haad Rin.
FULL MOON PARTY
Some six years ago, a group of tourists and the owner of
Paradise Bungalow discovered the potential of the full-moon
on Koh Phangan. Thus was born the full-moon party along the
crescent-shaped beach of Haad Rin to celebrate, what else,
the full moon. The party begins at dusk, when the moon makes
its appearance. At twilight, small tables are lined up on
the beach and thousands of lamps are lit transforming the
soft sands of Haad Rin into a fervent party zone with
throbbing music.
KOH TAN
Just 2 kms from Samui, with a long sandy beach. It is
surrounded by four other smaller islands. Besides
sunbathing, diving and snorkelling, you could fish, hike,
take in the bat caves or go to Koh Mad Sum for the Naga
Pearl farm.
NAGA PEARL FARM
South Sea Pearls are cultured at Koh Mad Sum, just off
the coast of Thailand. From Ban Thong Krut a 20-minute boat
trip will take you to Naga Pearl Farm at Koh Mad Sum. See
first hand, how pearls are cultured.
