Chiang Mai Walking Street
"Ta-noen-khon-deurn" is translated into English:
street-people-walk which is precisely what it truly turns out to
be with many things to see and enjoy. Every Sunday 12 noon until
midnight, the old city of Chiang Mai is shut down to motor
vehicles and turns into one large orgy of artisans, wholesalers,
jewellers, locals and tourists from every corner of the globe.
This
event covers approximately 6 city blocks, all along side the
road; small shops of arts, handicrafts, hand made garments and
jewellery of a wide variety and uninhibited styles all lay-out
for sale at unbelievable low prices. "Walking Street"
caters to wholesalers, importers and consumers; it is truly a
place to bargain if you are looking to buy in large quantity and
also serves as a link to larger manufacturers and wholesaler in
the region.
Walking Street is an absolute must-visit for visitors looking
for leads to large suppliers and first timers to Chiang Mai.
Walk and shop around long enough and your feet will begin to
feel heavy before your heart is content. But at almost every
intersection you will see lawn chairs set out for those tired of
walking and wish for a quick rest and a foot massage. A great
foot massage will cost about $1.25 for 30 minutes. A price
hard to resist - tired or not.
More than a place to walk and shop, "Walking Street"
serves us as a link to some of the larger manufacturers around
Chiang Mai. This is definitely a good place to start looking if
you are in the business of importing exotic arts and crafts.
