Shopping in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is
Thailand's major centre for handicrafts. You only have to
visit the nearest market or an emporium to purchase an
extraordinary variety of antiques, silver jewellery, opium
pipes, embroidery, silks and cottons, basketry, wood
carvings and parasols. You can watch artisans at work at
several places. A number of cottage industries line the Bo
Sang-San Kamphaeng Road.
Aka Wala
Paintings, ceramics, Thai silk and home furnishing. Open
daily 9am-6pm except Wed. Rattanakosin Rd, 053 260 514.
Baan Celadon
Quality Celadon with unique designs. Chiangmai-Sankampaeng
Rd., 053 338 288.
BAAN THAWAl. A Chatuchak-like market which is open seven
days a week, it represents all the arts and crafts of
Northern Thailand. On Hang-Dong-Sarapee Road.
Bo
Sang
Umbrella village full of umbrella manufacturers. Several
craft shops selling painted fans, umbrellas, pottery and
statues.
The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar
On Changklan Road, the night bazaar is a colourful shopping
venue. The pavement stalls sell everything from tacky
souvenirs to quality handicrafts.
Hang Dong
Basket village. Buy articles made from straw, bamboo and
rattan, including baskets, hats, furniture, etc Also on this
road about 4 kms from town are earthenware and lacquerware
shops.
Muang Kung Earthenware Village
Included in TATs Handicraft Villages Project, it is on
Chiang Mai-Hot Road. Various ceramic products for sale. 5
kms away is Ban Thawai, known for its wood carvings.
San Kamphaeng
For cottons and silk fabric and clothes. A little further
down the road from Bo Sang. The shirt styles are unique and
typical of the region.
Sang Ka Lok Ceramics Factory
1 km from Chiang Mai Cultural Centre, for green ceramics:
lamps, vases, plates, ash trays, etc Similar factories are
also to be found along Chiang Mai-San Kamphaeng Road.
Silverware Factory
Produces the finest silverware in Thailand. Certain families
have practised this art for generations, and the skill is
seen in their products. Most silver shops are concentrated
on Wualai Road.
